Design Overview

The previous assignment ended with sketches of a few designs. In this assignment, we selected and refined our design ideas, and chose one to build as a paper prototype. We then evaluated our design via informal usability testing, and we will use these test results to construct a freestanding (web) prototype for the next assignment.

Below is our user test script which we will present to various users we have contacted and ask them to read and follow the instructions to test our designs.

------------------SCRIPT------------------

Hello (user)! We're a group of four students from Olin, working on a project for our Human Factors and Interface Design class. Our goal is to help with the decision-making process involved in finding an activity. To that end, we've designed a paper prototype of a phone application that helps you decide on something to do.

We'd like to see how you interact with our prototype, to see what we can improve upon. [TEAM MEMBER] will be acting as the computer. You can click on the screen and curse at him for being slow, but, like a real phone, he won't be able to talk back. We encourage you to think out loud, because your thought processes can help us identify problems with our system. There probably will be things you're unsure of, and this is entirely our fault (not yours)! If there's anything you're unsure of, you can ask [OTHER TEAM MEMBER]. The piece of paper we've given you sets up a scenario and goals that you will try to accomplish using our application. Try to follow along with the goals as best you can, and please let us know how we can improve our system.

Your participation in this interview is entirely voluntary. If you feel uncomfortable at any time and do not wish to continue, simply let us know.

Pre-Questions:
1)Based on what we've said so far, what do you expect from our application?

Follow Up:
1) Why did you use this? Why did you not use this other thing?
2) Were you confused by any part of the interface?
3) Were you able to get through this as quickly as you wanted to?
4) Is there anything you wanted the application to do that you didn't see?
5)What kind of coloring scheme would you like to see?
6) Did you like the x's? Do they mean what you thought they would?
7) In the filter page, did you like how it was? Do you have suggestions? What if the top was metrics and the bottom was draggable?
8) Is the home screen too cluttered? Is the search function too buried?
9) Here's our menu page. Would this be better as the home page?
10) Surprise me button. What do you think it would do? Would you want/use one?
11) How many choices under personalized activities?

SCENARIOS

1. You're in the city, and you don't know what there is to do. You have $50 on you, just enough to afford a simple attraction, so now you need to find something that will both entertain you and not leave you in the red. You have a smart phone on you, and you open up your downloaded application "What We Do", in which you've already filled out a profile indicating you like to rock climb, swim, and go to clubs. You open the application, what do you do next?
Goals: Find rock climbing activity for under $50.

2. You're in the city, and you don't know what there is to do. You have $50 on you, just enough to afford a simple attraction, so now you need to find something that will both entertain you and not leave you in the red. You have a smart phone on you, and you remember that your friends have used an app called "What We Do?" to find out what there is to do, so you decide to try it out. Since you have never used it before, you have no saved preferences, so you must start from scratch to find out what there is to do. You open the application. What do you do next?
Goals: Find rock climbing activity for under $50.

3. You're at home, and you just downloaded an application called "What We Do?" You want to set up your profile. You like to:
1) Rock climb
2) Go to concerts
In general, you prefer not to have to travel too far to things, and would rather pay more to stay close than save money by travelling further. What do you do next?
Goals: Set up profile with activities you like and preferences for searches.
